MBABANE – Birmingham is committed to providing a safe environment for the forthcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The country will send a team to the games to be held from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, United Kingdom (UK). Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Maxwell Jele and Vice President Zakhele Dlamini are in Birmingham for a preparatory meeting and touring of the venues. They have already spent three days in the UK and are expected back home tomorrow. They have visited, among other places, the athletes’ village and some of the venues where the games would be held. Jele confirmed yesterday that all was well. “The meetings are going very well and they are very informative.

“On Monday we were taken through a tour of the University of Birmingham, which will house our team during the games. It is one of the three games athlete villages that will be used to accommodate athletes,” he said. Yesterday, Jele and Dlamini were taken through COVID-19 protocols, a tour of the swimming venue and the second athlete village, University of Warwick.

Meeting

Some of the topics covered during the meeting were on health especially the COVID-19 pandemic. “COVID-19 is still in pandemic state around the world. Therefore, Birmingham 2022 has decided to put in place a series of measures that go above what is required whilst staying in the UK. EOCGA is yet to announce the sporting codes and the athletes that would represent the country. The country last made history in the games in 2016 Melbourne Games where former boxer Simanga Shiba won a bronze medal.
