MBABANE – Junior golfer Joshua Potgieter beat a record field of 59 golfers to claim championship of the Lions Golf Club fundraiser tournament.

He took home a brand new deep freezer worth E2 800, and bragging rights as the youngest golfer to win the tournament. Lions Club is Manzini Golf Club service organisation that raises funds and assists the underprivileged in various communities through contributions of corporate companies and individual sponsors. The club currently runs four soup kitchens situated in Mafutseni, Makholweni, Ntabamhloshana and Sithobela. They have an annual budget of E120 000 for the soup kitchens which feed about 680 children. The tournament was staged on Saturday on the greens of the Manzini Golf Course, where Potgieter topped the charts with an unmatched 39 points. The future professional golfer’s passion and love for golf warmed the hearts of many golfers, including in July last year where he finished third during the Dups Herbal sponsored Leg of Lamb Golf Tournament. Impressed by his performance, captain Wakie Lawrence handed his the trophy to the youngster as a form of empowerment.

Potgieter returned to claim his first hard earned victory on August 13, 2021, winning by 20 points on count back (c/b), which placed him four points clear ahead of the runner-up Ben Simelane. Since then, he has been a regular on the podium, taking home meaty packages in prizes during the weekly Dups Herbal Leg of Lamb Golf Tournament that is also played at the Manzini Golf Course. Lions Club President Patrick Gamedze said the junior golfer’s historic victory was an inspiration to other young golfers. He thanked all the golfers who participated as well as those that contributed towards the fundraiser event.

elevates

“Manzini Golf Club always supports junior golfers and it was gratifying to see Joshua winning such a big tournament with a record field of 59 other golfers. This victory elevates him above his age mates and I believe that he owes his victory to his frequency in golf tournaments,” Gamedze said. Manzini Golf Club President and father to the champion, Jacques Potgieter trailed by one point as he was placed second while Dale Masilela scored 37 points to secure position three. Moses Dlamini and Qiniso Dlamini were tied on 36 points. The winners walked away with diverse prizes including shopping vouchers, home and electrical appliances and golf equipment among other things. This was the fifth edition of the tournament and due to COVID-19, it was suspended in 2019 and 2020. Golfers who wish to join the Lions Club can contact Gamedze on 7602 6423 for more details.
