MBABANE – A camp in South Africa (SA) is what Mbabane Highlanders anticipate during the FIFA international break starting next Monday until March 29.

The ‘see-saw’ at the summit of the MTN Premier League table between current leaders and defending champions Royal Leopard, who are on second with a game in hand and a point behind is an exciting one. However, Highlanders’ Managing Director Chief Ally Kgomongwe, is out on a bid to ensure they do not lose ground in the title chase and dream to play the TOTALEnergies CAF Champions League next year. “Leopard are playing tough games in CAF that have made them stronger for when they come back to the league. They are getting stronger with the CAF games while we’re not playing any competition, especially now that there’s a FIFA break.

“We were discussing this with ‘Sly’ and we concluded that let us use this break to also go for a camp in South Africa, where we can try getting at least two tough practice friendly matches against the DStv teams who are also not playing official competition,” said Kgomongwe yesterday evening. He said it was crucial for them to take the camp in Pretoria once again, as they saw how not playing competitive matches affected them in the first round incentive fight against same Leopard, who returned from a 2-6 drubbing by Orlando Pirates to win 2-0 against the capital city giants and claimed the E200 000 prize.

Big

Highlanders had only needed a draw to finish the first round at the summit. “We will probably go this weekend and spend the whole of next week away and trying to get friendly matches with big sides that side, so we can also return and try our best to match Leopard,” said Kgomongwe. He also added that they were looking to make one or two additions into the current squad during the second window which opened on March 7 and will close early next month. Highlanders were already eyeing a swap deal with Manzini Wanderers involving midfielder Lindani ‘Rio’ Matsenjwa, while they terminated South African striker Reabetswe Lehlohonolo Lekota’s six months contract due to lack of discipline, which saw the player involved in a brawl last weekend while out to have fun in one of the entertainment spots in Ezulwini, Mlindazwe.

His exit means there is space for one foreigner to join Kenneth ‘Moloto’ Mashaba, Nkosinathi ‘Smally’ Fakudze, David ‘GP’ Molekuli and Tony ‘Ben 10’ Machacha and Kgomongwe did not hide that it would be a striker to work with their main predator at the moment, Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa who Captains Highlanders for the second season now – he has scored 16 league goals so far to last season’s 19. Meanwhile, Highlanders are used to camping in Pretoria every pre-season since Kgomongwe took over in 2019.
