MANZINI – A brace by Mike Dombo propelled Denver Sundowns out of the relegation quagmire in the MTN Premier League.

They jumped from the 11th spot to ninth, with 19 points after 17 games. The win for Sundowns comes after playing two games without a win, losing to Tambuti and Malanti Chiefs. It was a sigh of relief for the head coach Ikabort Masocha. The same cannot be said about Green Mamba, who lost their second match in the second round since the arrival of former Mbabane Highlanders coach Ernest Mavuso. It was Mavuso’s second defeat after losing 1-2 to Mbabane Swallows in his first game in charge. They have 22 points in mid-table on position eight after 17 games.

Back to the match, Green Mamba started a better team as they dominated in the opening minutes of the match by creating chances. Two minutes before the hour mark, Green Mamba’s Banele Mdluli missed a seater as he blasted the ball over the cross bar while six yards out with the goal posts wide open in front of him. Four minutes later, that miss came back to haunt them as Sundowns took the lead through former Manzini Wanderers winger Dombo, who finished off with a ground shot after a scramble for the ball at six yards. Green Mamba continued with ball possession but failed to beat Sundowns defence at the back.

Chance

The ‘Correctional Service’ side started the second half a house like on fire as Sifiso Mdluli hit the upright, minutes after the restart. It was chance after chance for Green Mamba, but they failed to convert. Against the run of play, Dombo was back again for his eighth goal of the season as he curled the ball from outside the 18 area to the far right corner, and left Green Mambo’s goalkeeper Siyabonga Simelane with no chance  but to watch the ball as it landed at the back of the net. Sundowns held on until the referee Thulani Sibandze blow the final whistle, taking home the maximum points. Green Mamba’s next match is the security forces derby against Royal leopard while Sundowns will face Vovovo.
