MBABANE – Some members of the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Executive Committee’s trip to watch the TOTALEnergies Group B match between Royal Leopard and Libya’s Al-Ittihad Tripoli ended in agony.

This comes after three of the executive members were assaulted allegedly by members of the Swaziland Liberation Movement (SWALIMO) and those from the People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO), who were protesting outside the Mbombela Stadium, South Africa ahead and during the match on Sunday. A source close to the matter said one official was able to escape while two others were assaulted and assisted through the intervention of the South African police.

One of the EFA officials, who was severely assaulted, is regional football association chairman. The names of the three officials are known to this newspaper but will not be revealed for now because no one has been officially charged. The officials could not be reached when sought for comment on the issue yesterday. It has not been an easy journey for the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) envoys, Leopard who were met by protesters in the first home match they played at the 2010 FIFA World Cup venue.
