MBABANE – There are only 200 entries remaining.

Entries for the Athletics Eswatini Half Marathon are coming in thick and fast and with only two weeks remaining, 300 athletes have already registered. The figures were confirmed by AE Public Relations Officer (PRO) Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini, who urged athletes to registering advance. Dlamini said the cut-of mark was strictly 500. Registration is fixed at E50 per individual. The 21.1km and 10km race is slated for March 19, 2022. It will start and finish at the OlmypAfrica Sports Development Centre at Lobamba. He, however, noted that over half of the registered athletes were males and therefore, encouraged female athletes to also register.  “Road runners are advised to register now since this will allow us to plan ahead and avoid making hasty decisions. We are impressed with the numbers and they show that the athletes have been hungry for a road race,” Dlamini said.

He thanked the athletes who took the initiative of acquainting themselves with the race route by join participating in the marathon pre-run held on Saturday. He highlighted the benefits of a pre-run as this also had a positive influence in athlete performance on race day. “Athletes are also reminded to keep time. The race starts at exactly 6am and it is always advisable to arrive at the starting point at least 15 minutes prior. I want to encourage parents to encourage the girl-child to participate in this event. Gone are the days where a woman’s place was considered to be in the kitchen.  Let us give men and women equal opportunities not just in athletics but in all sports,” he said. Some of the local athletic clubs that are partnering with AE in this race include TZD, Slojos, Ngculwini, Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force, Manzini Striders and Golden Foot, Correctional Services, Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), among others. The marathon was launched on March 8, 2022 at Sigwaca House in Mbabane.
