MBABANE – Former Mbabane Highlanders coach, Ernest Mavuso, is tipped for the vacant coaching post at Manzini Wanderers.

Mavuso, who is currently without a team after being released by the black and white ensemble, is favourite to take over after the sacking of Nyanga ‘Crooks’ Hlophe on Friday. A source close to the matter said the coach was set to meet the hub giants’ authorities today. Mavuso, who propelled Highlanders to be among the challengers of the MTN Premier League first round E200 000 incentive, only spent seven months with the club, having been appointed in June and released last month. He was replaced by South African Selaotse ‘Sly’ Mosala.

tipped

This could not be Mavuso’s only good news as he is also tipped for the national Under-20 coaching position. He is set to take over from Royal Leopard coach Edwin Matsebula, who is currently leading his side in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages. A source close to the matter said Wanderers were also looking for an international coach, but Mavuso was favourite as he was still not contracted to any team. The source said nothing yet had been finalised between the two parties, but he was a favourite. After a week-long break, Manzini Wanderers return to training today and Teresayi Changara will be in charge in the absence of a coach. The team was due to begin training yesterday, but it was called off at Malkerns Country Club.
Wanderers ended the first round ninth on the log standings with 20 points after 15 matches. After a good start in the season, the club failed to bring in results towards the end of the first round and that prompted Hlophe’s sacking.

performance

“The team is vying for him because of his performance with Mbabane Highlanders. He is one of the top coaches in the country and the Wanderers family believe that he is the right man for the job,” said a source close to the Management Committee (MC). The maroon and white outfit have failed to win a match in their past six games, losing three and drawing same. Their last win was against Denver Sundowns on January 22. They have lost against Milling Hot Spurs, Mbabane Swallows, Tinyosi and drew against Green Mamba, Tambankulu Callies and Moneni Pirates. Mavuso said so far he is not contracted to any team since he departed at Highlanders and he requested not to comment further. Wanderers Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mlungisi Ndzinisa could not be reached for comment last night as his mobile phone was not available on the network.

official

Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Communications and Marketing Officer Muzi Radebe said there was nothing official concerning the National Under-20 coaching post as the matter was still being discussed by the technical committee, who were yet to send a report to the Executive Committee for approval. EFA recently handed national team, Sihlangu head coach Dominic Kunene a one-year contract.
