MBABANE – Four of the country’s referees are heading for the big stage.

Letticia Viana will be the main referee among three other Eswatini female referees to officiate during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers (WAFCON) match between Zambia and Namibia. The match will be played tomorrow at the Nkoloma Stadium. Siphiwayinkosi Nxumalo was appointed as Viana’s first assistant, while Buyisile Mkhaliphi will be the second assistant with Tencwala Soko being the fourth official. These referees are all officiating in the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) games. The team travelled yesterday as confirmed by Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Communications and Marketing Officer Muzi Radebe, who congratulated the team for the FIFA recognition. Radebe said this was not only a motivation to other ladies to pursue refereeing courses, but also a positive for football in the country.

“These officials are FIFA credited and this recognition means we are on the right track as a country. They have been to COSAFA and it means that FIFA saw something positive in them,” Radebe said. Eswatini Referees Association (ERA) Secretary Mbongeni Shongwe wished the team a safe trip on the international assignment and hoped that they would execute their duties truthfully and to the best of their capabilities. The finals of these qualifiers are scheduled to be played between July 2 and 23 in Morocco and these would also double as the African Qualifiers for the Women’s FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup Finals. The top four national teams will progress to the finals in Australia and New Zealand.
