MBABANE – It’s all good news for Royal Leopard.

The Police ensemble’s TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup group stages games will be broadcasted live on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Sport. This comes after the SABC secured the broadcasting rights from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the next two years. They will broadcast about 440 matches including those from the CAF Champions League. SABC Sport is a South African free-to-air sports television channel owned by the SABC. The games will be broadcasts on DTT and on SABC challenges. The first game to take centre stage in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages is that of South Africa’s Orlando Pirates and JS Saoura from Algeria who are in the same group with Royal Leopard. The Police side is out of action this week as they were handed time to rest this Saturday.

A source close to the matter confirmed that Leopard is likely to take centre stage on the big screen when they play Orlando Pirates. Their first leg match is billed for February 27 at the Mavuso Sports Centre with the second leg match away a week later. The source further stated that the monetary value that the police side could receive from the broadcasting of their games would range between E150 000 to E200 000 per match. “It’s a good deal for Leopard. They could make extra money as playing in Africa is an expensive exercise,” the source added.

Leopard who arrived on Tuesday from Algeria, where they made history by qualifying for the group stages for the first time, will play Algeria’s Saoura on February 20, away in Algiers before coming home to play Pirates. Their first game that was set to play on Saturday was postponed to March 6, 2022. Leopard Public Relations Officer (PRO) Frank Hurube said this would be good news for the club but there was nothing officials had communicated to them concerning the broadcasting of the games. “It would be good for us because we will play while watched by the whole world but nothing officials that have reached us concerning the broadcasting of the games,” he said.

All broadcasting rights for match are handled by CAF and this time around they were sold to the SABC that would pick the games that want to broadcast live. According to www.iol.co.za, SABC secured rights to broadcast the recently ended CAF AFCON 2022 final, CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup. Head of SABC Sport, Gary Rathbone, said the inclusion of CAF to the SABC Sport offering is indicative of the purpose that SABC Sport serves, by bringing the best in African and international sport to the homes of all South African citizens. Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Marketing and Communications Officer, Muzi Radebe, could not be drawn for comment as his cellphone rang answered yesterday afternoon. It was Mbabane Swallows who were last to play under live broadcast when they played in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup group stages in 2015/ 16 and 2016/17 seasons respectively.
