MBABANE – “Win it and E50 000 is yours to share.”

That is the declaration made by capital city giants Mbabane Highlanders Managing Director, Chief Ally Kgomongwe before he crossed the border back to South Africa, Pretoria last week. This, after witnessing his team romp over Tambankulu Callies with a 4-2 win, a 1-0 defeat to Vovovo and the all-important 1-0 win against derby rivals, Mbabane Swallows. He did not watch the latest 3-1 win against Tambuti this past Sunday.

“I’m very keen on the league’s results these days, especially where Leopard are concerned. We must beat them to win the first round prize and it starts with winning against Milling this weekend then also going on to beat them in our last first round match. I told my players and the technical bench that if they can do this, then E50 000 is coming straight to them to share as well as match winning bonuses,” affirmed Kgomongwe from Pretoria after he was called and asked about this as impeccable sources within the club leaked the news. He said he was quite confident that he was doing enough to keep his players motivated to want to win every match they played. “I have confidence in my players because I saw their spirit is very high and losing is not easy when you have a team that fights for each other and know its primary objective.

Champions

“We want to play in the CAF Champions League, that is our ultimate goal, but we also have a good chance now to finish this round with something in hand so we’re going for it,” he said.
Kgomongwe also said that he was aware of Leopard’s remaining matches which he described as very tough. “It’s all tough games for them and I don’t know if they can go on to win all of them when they also have to play us. That’s why it’s important that we beat Milling Hot Spurs and then wait for Leopard who we must beat as well when we play them or at least not lose that match,” he explained. Kgomongwe has recently splashed the cash after the derby win and in the end the money he gave to the players for winning the match was E21 000 as he stated that such bonuses would always be there with the big matches including that against Leopard. Kgomongwe’s team beat Leopard once in the 2019 Charity Cup and then played 2-all draw and lost 2-1 last season to same side.

Meanwhile, Highlanders are at top of the log standings with a four-point gap from second-placed Leopard, who are also defending champions and missed the first round incentive by a whisker last season. Runners-up Young Buffaloes won it on final first round match-day. Leopard will also fall two games behind Highlanders with a pending fixture against tough rivals Buffaloes and then Manzini Sea Birds, who they were due to play this weekend. due to their TOTALEnergies CAF Confederation Cup second leg away play-off match with Algeria’s JS Kabylie on Sunday the game was postponed. Leopard played a 2-2 draw with Vovovo on Monday afternoon after coming from behind with a late equaliser, thanks to former Highlanders and Swallows marksman Thabiso Mokenkoane.
