GREEN MAMBA BITE KAPPA BOYS

BIG BEND – Mthunzi ‘Xavi’ Mkhontfo’s lone strike earned Green Mamba the maximum points in a very interesting MTN Premier League game played here yesterday.

The former As Vita striker benefitted from Mcolisi Manana’s cross, as he showed great composure in front of the goal post. He controlled the ball unmarked inside the box and let fly a rocket shot that landed in the back of the net 13 minutes into the game. It was the visitors who controlled the first half but poor finishing was their major let down.

Their clear chance came in at the half-hour mark, when Mancoba ‘Spider’ Maseko’s shot inside the danger zone hit the upright with goalkeeper Thokozani Mkhulisi well beaten.
Both coaches made changes 10 minutes into the second stanza.  Green Mamba’s mentor Dumsani ‘DU’ Makhanya brought in Njabulo Magagula for Banele Mdluli. On the other hand, Sundows coach Ikabort Masocha introduced Bheki Mlotsa for Mduduzi Khumalo. The changes seemed to bring life into the game, as the Kappa Boys started to dominate play. Just a minute into the game Mlotsa’s rocket like shot outside the box narrowly went wide with the keeper at bay.

Xavi could not believe his eyes when his well taken shot inside the box missed the target with Sundowns goalkeeper Felizwe Vilakati well beaten. The correctional side thought to have wrapped the match, as Khethokuhle Mkhontfo’s free header unmarked inside the box was ruled for an offside 15 minutes before regulation time. Referee Thulani Sibandze blew the final whistle with Sundowns on top of the game, searching for an equaliser. The result saw the Dumsani Makhanya-led side moving two places up the log table, leap-frogging Moneni Pirates and Manzini Wanderers.
