MBABANE – The cancellation of the 2021 COSAFA Under-20 Men’s Championship has deprived Eswatini a lot.

This was disclosed by former national team Manager Josiah ‘Digger’ Dlamini after the tournament which was scheduled to start this weekend in the country. The tournament suspension came after the rise in COVID-19 cases and the emergence of the new variant omicron, which has caused travel chaos in the region.
Dlamini said it was a huge blow for the country as well as for the youngsters who were part of the squad that was to compete in the tournament. “This was a chance for our local lads to showcase their talent in the region and this would have helped in the development of the sport in the country,” Dlamini said.

He said it was not only football that was going to benefit from the tournament being hosted in Eswatini, as a lot of industries would have benefitted. “The hospitality and transport industries were one of the sectors that were going to benefit from hosting this tournament,” he said. He, however, said this was a blessing in disguise for Eswatini as regional football was expected to resume, so the coaches would have a wide pool to select from. The 2021 COSAFA Under-20 Men’s Championship was scheduled to take place in the country from December 10-18. It was to be played in two venues, the Mavuso Sports Centre and KaLanga Technical Centre. The competition has been postponed to 2022.
