MBABANE – The champions of the women’s football league will pocket E20 000.

This is a E1 500 increment from last season’s E18 500 which was won by Manzini Wanderers Ladies. The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) is the main sponsor of the women’s league. The whole package is about E100 000, which will be shared by the 13 elite teams.  The runners-up prize is E15 000 while third place winners are guaranteed to take home E10 000.

According to the prize breakdown as prescribed in the 2021/2022 women’s football league rules and regulations, none of the teams will go home empty handed as the least performing team will get E2 000 at the end of the season. The top goalscorer award remains fixed at E600. After the first league games played over the weekend, Eswatini Women’s Football Association (EWFA) Chairman of the Competition’s Committee, Lucky Dube said the prize breakdown was exclusive of transport costs as all teams received E500 and double the amount for away games. The league will be played for 24 weeks.

“All teams received E1 500 participation fee and that is separate from the prize package. The sponsorship is a slight increment from the previous season. We are happy to be back and as much as we are returning in the era of COVID-19, we believe that the compliance officer will ensure that the safety precautions are implemented during training and the league,” Dube said.

Games will continue this weekend and the detailed fixture will be announced during the course of the week. Meanwhile, the issue of lack of sponsorship for women’s football has proven to be a challenge as sustaining the teams demands financial injection. Dube thanked the EFA for supporting the women’s league, highlighting that women’s football development was the world football mother body’s priority especially in developing African countries like Eswatini. “Lack of sponsorship is delaying the development of women’s football. The EWFA is reaching out to companies and individuals who would like to contribute financially to motivate the players,” Dube said.
