MBABANE – Royal Leopard will be aiming for a good start in their campaign to defend the MTN Premier League crown.

The police side will face rivals, Mbabane Swallows in the grand opening billed for Saturday at Mavuso Sports Centre, kick-off  at 3pm. Leopard reigned supreme in their last meeting on July 25, 2021 when they won 2-0 on their way to win the trophy at Ka-Langa Technical Centre. Leopard and Young Buffaloes have been the only active teams in the country in the past two months.

Leopard have played two rounds in the TOTALEnergies CAF Champions League 2021/22 where they had four matches, two here at home and the same number away. However, they exited the competition last Saturday on a 3-2 aggregate to Angola’s Sagrada Esperanca while Buffaloes were knocked out in the first preliminary round last month by Zambia’s Red Arrows in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup where Leopard will now be playing against an Algerian side, JS Kabyile next month.

Leopard will be without defender in Mlamuli Nkambule, who was injured in Zambia during the second leg match against ZESCO United. The player has not yet started training. The Police ensemble will welcome back defender Phumlani Dlamini after being on the side-line before end of last season. The team Public Relations Officer (PRO) Frank Hurube said preparations were going well ahead of the fixture. He said they had been active and they were looking forward to the match.

“When you want to win the league you have to start well and collect points in the first matches. Things become more difficult as the games continue. We are doing our best to be ready for the game and it will help us as we prepare for the CAF Confederation Cup matches,” he said. The Tambuti FC versus Tabankulu Callies clash which had initially been scheduled for Mayaluka Stadium but has since been shifted to the King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium due to unavailability of the sugar-belt venue.
