MBABANE – Swim Lab Swimming Club will fly high in the African Swimming Confederation (CANA) Zone IV Virtual championships.

Ten swimmers are set to represent the country in the competitions starting on Friday with the last day being Sunday. The squad, led by Swim Lab Coach Welcome Nhlabatsi, will leave the country tomorrow for Nelspruit, South Africa. South African and local swimmers are expected to be joined by Mozambique during the competitions to be held virtually for the first time. Some of the members under the CANA Region IV will also compete same time, winning through overall results from all the members.

The squad, as announced by the Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) President, Herman Jele, comprises of Olympic Athletes Simanga Dlamini and Robyn Young, Hayley Hoy, who has broken over 10 records in the past two years, Nina Hlophe, Swakhile Dlamini, Raya Young, Damien Desousa, Luca Fraser, Tiano Fraser and Cameron Jele. “We are happy as a team that our swimmers will be competing on a bigger stage and it all came down to hard work. It is a good feeling for a coach to produce national team swimmers. The swimmers deserve to be in these competitions,” he said.

Nhlabatsi said they were not getting competitions in the country, so competing internationally was good for them. “Honestly, we are not getting any competition locally. We really urge coaches to bring more swimmers and start more clubs in the country. As a club, we are now looking at doing more South African galas. We do a lot of Mpumalanga competitions, we now want to try Gauteng and KZN,” he said.

“The team will leave the country on Thursday morning. They will have their first training Friday afternoon. The president also named the team that would travel to Abu Dhabi for short course world champs. Again, the squad comprises Swim Lab swimmers only namely; Raya Young, Swakhile Dlamini, Simanga Dlamini and Damien Desousa,” Jele said.
