MBABANE- He did it in 2018 against Egypt and he repeated the feat in March against Senegal.

That is the story of Mbabane Highlanders winger Sabelo ‘Sawa’ Gamedze who proved to the African continent that Eswatini has talent. Many thought that when he scored that spectacular goal in the Africa Cup of Nations on October 12, 2018 against The Pharaohs, it was a fluke. He scored just a few metres away from the centre line, beating the goalie who was way off his line. That 85th minute goal did not only give scribes something to write about home but it also gave Eswatini the much needed consolation goal. They lost with dignity to a team that had Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah on the starting 11 on the day. The Reds man scored the last goal on the 45th minute. The final score was 4-1 in favour of the Egyptians.

Senegal

Fast forward to March 30, this year, ‘Sawa’ did it again, this time against Africa’s number one ranked country, Senegal. Again another Liverpool man, Sadio Mane was playing on the day; the diminutive winger rattled the net four minutes in play. He volleyed the ball in the top corner catching the goalkeeper off-guard. Reminiscing about the moment, ‘Sawa’ said that he still cherished those moments. “I am proud of those two goals which I scored for the national team,” Gamedze said. Asked how he managed to do that, he said; “You know when you are playing big teams in Africa, the goalkeepers tend to relax and I was always paying a close eye on them. When I saw that they were relaxed, I struck and luckily the trick worked and yes it worked twice in Africa against the very best nations,” he said.

Offers

Asked if those goals had somehow attracted offers from across the border, Gamedze said; “Some agents across Africa did text me and told me they will look for me better offers in Africa and abroad. I still hope that one day I will live to see my dream of playing abroad come true,” he said. He was quick to say that he was happy at Mbabane Highlanders. “If I am going to play for another team, I do not think it will be here in Eswatini, I’d rather play for Highlanders or a team outside the country,” he added.
He said personally he wished Highlanders could win the league just for their loyal fans and supportive director Chief Ally Kgomongwe.
