MBABANE – The country’s sprinter Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa is ready for the big stage in the Olympic Games.

Matsenjwa will be making his third appearance in the Olympic Games when he competes in the 200m race this morning at 4am (Local time) and 11:40pm (Tokyo time). He is the last athlete to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games after the trio of swimmers Simanga Dlamini and Robyn Young, and Boxer Thabiso Dlamini. Matsenjwa made his debut in the Olympic Games in London 2012 and his second was in 2016 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) Athletics Club athlete said he was ready to make the country proud when he took to the track.

“I am ready for the challenge ahead of me. Since I arrived here last Thursday, everything has been good and I’m looking forward to my race. I plead with the nation to support me as I am ready to make everyone who will be watching happy,” he said.
Matsenjwa, who holds both national records in 100m and 200m races, goes to the games with a personal best of 20:48 seconds in the 200m. The 32-year-old has the experience of such games of high magnitude as he had competed in games including World Champions, All Africa Games and Regional Championships among others. Matsenjwa had been dominant in the 100m and 200m races in the country since 2008 and he is yet to get a competitor in the sprints.

performance

Matsenjwa went to the game under the leadership of Muzi Mabuza who is his coach. Mabuza said he was looking forward to the athletes’ performance as there was a lot that he could achieve. “The stage is set and all is well here. This track is fast and we have seen that through the other events that have already been held. I can say the athlete is in good condition and ready for action. I believe there is a lot he can achieve here including personal bests,” he said. Matsenjwa will compete with athletes from Japan, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Qatar, Brazil and Tunisia in his heat.
