LOBAMBA – A big international stage opportunity for the country’s women national Under-20 squad!

Currently in camp at the EFA Technical Centre in Lobamba for about three weeks, the country’s Under-20 national women’s team will face off with Mozambique during the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 (AFCON) Qualifiers. They are preparing for the qualifiers.
The squad comprises the under-17 team players who participated in the 2019 edition and coached by Siphesihle Simelane. During their media day at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday, it was announced that the first leg will see the home side hosting the neighbours, Mozambique on August 7 and the final leg is set to be played on the weekend of August 28 and 29. The aggregate winners will then meet South Africa in September. The first leg clash is expected to be played between the weekend of September 25 and 26. The return leg will be played between the weekend of October 9 and 10.

Training

The winner from that match will then earn a ticket to play in Morocco for the AFCON finals billed for later this year. Eswatini Under-20 head coach Siphesihle Simelane said despite that the COVID-19 had disturbed their training schedule. “All is not lost as you can see we are hard at training here and the girls are responding very well. We are positive that by the time we play our opponents we will be ready,” said Simelane. Questioned how she assembled the squad, Simelane said a majority of the players were from the under-17 team that played in the COSAFA Championship in 2019. The squad’s Captain, Simangele Sikhondze said they felt ready for Mozambique and would likely get positive results. “There is nothing which beats hard work and determination. We can beat Mozambique home and away,” said the youngster. Meanwhile, another star player Nonjabuliso Mokgale said she was excited to be part of the team and looking forward to making a positive contribution. The winner in the AFCON finals will represent Africa in the FIFA Under-20 Women World Cup slated for next year in Costa Rica.
