PIGG’S PEAK – Malanti Chiefs lost their relegation survival grip when they lost 1-2 to Mhlume Peacemakers in the MTN Premier League yesterday.

The loss saw Malanti Chiefs pushed back at the bottom of the table with Peacemakers overtaking them to second from the bottom with 16 points. This was Malanti Chiefs’ first defeat in the second round after seven games and it was Peacemakers’ first victory in the second round.

It was a dream start for Mhlume Peacemakers as they took the lead as early as two minutes through Bandile Nxumalo, who blasted the ball at the back of the net unmarked in the box as Malanti Chiefs were still trying to settle in. That was a wakeup call for Malanti Chiefs as from that moment they pushed for an equaliser and Peacemakers goalkeeper Siyabonga Magagula had to prove himself as he made a double save with the game played quarter of an hour. The pressure became too much for Peacemakers nine minutes from the hour mark. Failure by defender Karim Madja to clear the ball gave an opportunity to Zweli Fakudze, who won the ball and went straight for the goal. He easily beat the goalkeeper, Siyabonga Magagula, with a ground shot. The game went for a breather held at 1-all draw.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Malanti Chiefs were in full control of the game creating chances but failing to convert. They were made to pay four minutes from the hour mark when George Jwankie unleashed a powerful shot inside the box beating the goalkeeper, Xolani Gama. It was chance after chance for Malanti Chiefs, failing to find the much needed goal and Peacemakers held open until the referee Leticia Viena blew the final whistle. Malanti Chiefs have two games in hand and they will face Tambuti on Wednesday at Killarney Stadium at 12:30pm.
