MBABANE – Sicelo Mkhonta has taken over at Manzini Sea Birds.

He is taking over from the newly-elected Eswatini Football Association (EFA) President Peter ‘Samora’ Simelane, who had been a Director at the team for two decades. Simelane was elected EFA President on Sunday during the elections held at Happy Valley Hotel. The position of president at EFA forces him to relinquish his directorship at Manzini Sea Birds. He confirmed yesterday that Mkhonta would continue as a Director and as a Governor at the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE). “I have served Sea Birds for about 20 years.  I believe that Sea Birds remains in good hands as it has always been while we were together with Mkhonta and the others,” he said.

Simelane was also a player at Sea Birds and was once the eldest player in the premier league, retiring at the ripe age of 46 years. He also served for about eight years as treasurer in the Manzini Regional Football Association (MRFA). He said Mkhonta would be working with Sibusile Mamba, who will be the manager of the team. Mkhonta congratulated Simelane for winning the elections.  “It’s been a great year while we were together and I can declare that EFA is lucky to be under his leadership. The club had been under good leadership with Simelane and we will continue to thrive,” he said. Mkhonta said they were going to fully support Simelane while he executed his duties as the country’s football mother body leader for the next four years. Simelane took over from Bomber Mthethwa, who had also served for over 20 years at EFA. Manzini Sea Birds have guaranteed their spot in the elite league next season as they are seventh on the log with 30 points while only seven games remain before the season comes to end.
