E150 000 FOR NATIONAL CHAMPS

MBABANE – It rained sponsorships for Athletics Eswatini (AE) four days ahead of the highly-anticipated senior national championships.

AE received about E150 000 sponsorships from six different entities.The sponsorships, which will go towards hosting of the national championships, were launched yesterday at the Ministry of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs offices. The national championships will be held on Saturday at Mavuso Sports Centre, where athletes will compete in about 12 events. The events include the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1 500m, 4x100m, 4x400m, high jump, javelin, discus and shot put among others.

Eswatini TV sponsored the event to the tune of E80 000 and it will go towards broadcasting the event live on Saturday while the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) will assist to the value of E20 000.
Eswatini National Provident Fund (ENPF) presented a cheque of E15 000 that will go towards dressing of athletes and technical officials among others things. Sweet Home Investment sponsored the event with E10 000 while Agri-Fuel will provide water during the event and SNG Grant Thornton will also provide t-shirts for the athletes. “To our sponsors and partners present here today and all those that have contributed something towards our championships, we say thank you very much, you are doing a great service to the nation and your efforts will not go unnoticed.

Inspiring

“Our athletes always look forward to the championships and your contribution will go a long way towards ensuring that the event lives up to the hype and expectations as well as inspiring many to work hard towards producing good performances,” he said. Dlamini said AE was about identifying, nurturing, developing and creating opportunities for athletes who aspire to excel. He said their duty was to promote and encourage healthy living and physical fitness. “The championships form the pyramid of athletics in the country, this is where we gauge ourselves in terms of how we fair. They are also used to select athletes to represent the nation internationally and this being an Olympic year with the Tokyo Olympic Games coming in July-August; all Olympic hopefuls have to go through the national championships,” he said. Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) Board Chairman Celucolo ‘Dino’ Dlamini sent their profound appreciation to the partners for supporting athletics.
