MBABANE – Once hired by the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) they should either relinquish their positions or turn down the appointment.

This was a proposal made by coaches for Eswatini Football Coaches Association (EFCA) executive members who were hired by the football mother body. This was yesterday at Sigwaca House Conference Hall during the coaches association Extra Ordinary General Meeting where coaches were reviewing their constitution with the aim to amend it for adoption after approval during their upcoming elective annual general meeting (AGM) in July.

A member moved the proposal and it was motivated by the likes of vocal coaches in former Denver Sundowns’ Penuel Malinga and Velekhaya Mthethwa. “Once appointed by the EFA, the executive members should either step down or turn down the EFA appointment,” said Malinga. This seemed not to have gone down well with the EFCA Chairman Anthony Mdluli, who said it was agreed in the past at higher level that there was no conflict of interest in such a setup as they were professionals and they were well aware that they had to serve the interests of the EFCA membership. The proposal was that the constitution should have a clause that stipulated that an individual elected in the coaches’ association executive must not work for the EFA.

The emotional debate led to Malinga stating that they did not suggest that this be something done immediately but there must be a transitional period to properly incorporate this in the amended constitution. The heated debate led to the chairperson highlighting that coaches were employees of the EFA, something which they refuted explaining that they were merely service providers. An example was made that even for schools’ head teachers, they had to form their own association and not be part of the Swaziland National Teachers Association (SNAT) as there was also conflict of interest. Noteworthy is that the EFCA chairperson, Mdluli, is hired by the EFA as the national team, Sihlangu, assistant coach after a promotion from the position of goalkeeper coaching following the passing away of the then assistant coach Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini.

The EFCA Treasurer Dominic Kunene is also hired by the football mother body as Sihlangu head coach. The executive also comprises Musa Mamba, the secretary general, Mbabane Highlanders head coach Dumisani Makhanya as the vice chairperson, Mbabane Swallows assistant coach Musa Manyatsi as the vice secretary and two members being Christian Thwala and Sipho Dlamini.
