MANZINI – Manzini Athletics Club (MAC) athletes displayed a sterling performance during Athletics Eswatini Senior National Championships first build up competitions.

In the absence of elite athletes in Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa, Andile Lusenga and Phumlile Ndzinisa, the athletes left a mark and showed a great potential going to the championships billed for May 22 at Mavuso Sports Centre. The competitions were held on Sunday at Mavuso Sports Centre under strict COVID-19 regulations. Some of the athletes who were on top of their game included sprinters Sambulo Xaba, Bongumenzi Mbingo, Siphosethu Mthembu, Ayanda Malaza and Banele Dlamini among others. They dominated the sprints and also won both the 4x100m and the 4x400m.

Excitement was written all over their faces along with coach Muzi Mabuza as each time they clinched a race they celebrated their victories. The athletes will be back in action on May 8 for the last build-up competing. Athletics Eswatini (AE) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini said every athlete to compete in the national championships should have competed in one of the build-up competitions. The second build competition is expected to feature majority of the elite athletes. Athletes Nokwanda Mnisi said they were happy to be back in action and they will work hard to improve the results. “We are so happy that finally we are back in action after a long time. It has been tough for us but I’m happy as I have been training during the partial lockdown. I’m targeting at least 54:00 before the championships,” she said.
