MBABANE – Women empowerment.

True to his promise, Moneni Pirates Director Nqobizitha Mlilo has appointed renowned lady advocate Gigi Reid as the Club’s Board of Directors’ Chairperson. The Zimbabwe-born Mlilo had indicated to this publication after he was unveiled by the club that the composition of the Board would be dominated by women. Reid is not the only big name in the Board as renowned international lady golfer Nobuhle Dlamini has also been recruited to join alongside the club’s former Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sibongile Makhanya. The rest of the women members in the Board are Karabo Mathang Tshabuse, Lomakhosetive Tshabalala, Marcia Mabuza, Mpho Mahlangu, Lungile Nxumalo and Shuvai Kagaro.

“As is evident, all members of the Board are female, this is consistent with our commitment to women empowerment. “It is our hope that our club becomes the flagship for making it fashionable to empower the women, and girl child of Eswatini and our continent,” Mlilo said. Mlilo added that there was another member he would present in the coming days, stating that: “I have discussed the appointment with her. She has given me her verbal acceptance. I am awaiting written confirmation.”  Mlilo stated that Reid’s appointment reaffirms his determination and deliberate commitment to the empowerment of women, recognition of female talent, as well as the need to motivate young females to enter football (and business) administration. In a letter directed to Reid, Mlilo said: “It is my pleasure to write to you to confirm your appointment as the Chairperson of Moneni Pirates Football Club (PTY) LTD Board of Directors.

The appointment confers all and any necessary powers, privileges and responsibilities as are provided in all legislation or law in the Kingdom of Eswatini as is relevant for such appointment.” Mlilo said they were delighted to celebrate this historical moment as the first female to be chairperson of a football team in Eswatini. He said they had trust that this would pave way for more females. “In the next few days, my office will be requesting an appointment with you. In the contemplated meeting, it is my intention to present to you the status quo, present plans and to hear from you as may be necessary,” Mlilo said. Efforts were made to get a comment from Reid but her cellphone rang unanswered when called yesterday afternoon.
