My dearest readers ...

In his speech from the Throne, His Majesty King Mswati III on February 19 during the third session of the Kingdom of Eswatini’s 11th Parliament, emphasised the need for the nation to heal, rebuild the economy and bring stability to all systems disturbed by one of the greatest tragedies to human kind – the coronavirus. “Nine Bekunene, the coronavirus pandemic and its effects has been a long and painful journey. It is time to heal our nation, rebuild our economy and bring stability to all our systems that have been disturbed during this time. The task that lies ahead may seem daunting but it is not insurmountable. We have new dreams to launch and new plans to build as the year 2022 is upon us,” roared the Lion. It is His Majesty’s parting shot in his speech which tickles my fancy and by extension seems to be the driving force for the new Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Executive Committee headed by businessman Mark Carmichael.

Taking over an organisation which like the ‘Slay Queens’ who thrive on their Three Cs being cash, cellphone and cars, it thrived on its own Three Cs – chaos, crisis and confusion with gay abandon. When the dearly departed chairman, Victor ‘Maradona’ Gamedze, was gunned down in cold blood on January 14, 2018 at exactly 6:53pm by a bumbling fool with no regard for life, with those who took over, it seemed akin to Lewis Hamilton handing the keys to his Mercedes-AMG One hyper car to Stevie Wonder after plying him with tequila.

Disastrous stuff.

The new PLE Executive Committee barely eight months in office has had to deal with not only the adverse effects of COVID-19, which literally brought football to a juddering halt, but they have had to resuscitate an organisation on a life-support system – financially and administratively speaking. Two estranged Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in Zwelonkhe ‘Sport’ Dlamini and Simanga Nhleko needed to be paid off yet this is an organisation that only recorded a meagre E70 000 profit. The self-same organisation which had seen an increase of administrative costs shoot up from E800 000 to E1.9 million within a year. It had long taken a potholed road to oblivion. In came Carmichael and his cosmopolitan Executive Committee and to their credit, they have steadied the ship. They have faced unprecedented challenges but the prospects going forward are good.
Carmichael, as a captain of the ship, needs to know his circle to ensure everybody on board is rowing, not drilling holes when he is not looking. He needs to be decisive about this because some of us have been in this game for too long and know some of the characters on board and what they are capable of. Keep them on the leash Mark!
