MBABANE – Sports administrator Sidney Simelane will leave the Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the end of this month.

His last day in office is on March 31. Simelane, who is former Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) CEO, took over the reins in 2018 after now-elected Board Member Muriel Hofer. He confirmed yesterday through a statement, after some questions from this newspaper, that he will be leaving month end. Simelane steps down less than a month after the new elected Board Chaired by Eswatini Football Association (EFA) President ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa took office.“The secretary general/ CEO has officially confirmed to the new executive Board that he is not available to engage on a future service term. Both parties have agreed to collaborate closely in order to smoothen the transition. Effectively, March 31, 2021 will be the final day for Sidney Simelane in office,” reads the statement.

Simelane has great experience in sport administration as he was once based in Botswana where he served as Project and Marketing Manager for the African Union Sports Council, (AUSC), Region V, before joining EOCGA. Simelane was appointed by the former Board under the leadership of Peter Shongwe. The new Board President ‘Bomber’ Mthethwa confirmed yesterday, but referred more comments to the office. The new Board is expected to appoint the new CEO, especially after the official handover has been completed.

EOCGA had its zoom handover meeting on March 17. The new Board was elected on March 7 during a virtual general assembly. The new Board comprises of Mthethwa, Vice President Maxwell Jele, treasurer Zakhele Zulu and members, Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini, Pearl Dlamini, Muriel Hofer, Nhlanhla Maphanga and Lee-Ann Young. “We would like to thank all stakeholders (national associations) and partners, in particular AUSC, Region V, for allowing EOCGA to use its elections Runner Platform. We are grateful to the massive support received in hosting the XXVI General Assembly on March 7. This general assembly was significant because it was an elective assembly,” concluded the statement.
