MBABANE – Not-so-calmer waters for the sailing Manzini Wanderers ship.
Players have been paid half their salaries for the month of February despite the fact that the maroon and white outfit had assured that players will be paid in full for this month after their salaries were also slashed for January as per their no-work-no-pay policy. Highly-placed sources have confided in this publication that management had informed players that for the month of February, due to the effects of COVID-19, they would implement the no-work-no-pay policy, but give them at least half of their salaries as per their contracts.

“If for instance, the player earns a monthly salary of E5 000, they would receive E2 500. There players had not received even the slashed salaries by the end of last week, I am not sure if they were eventually paid,” confided a source. When sought for comment, Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mlungisi ‘Mluga’ Ndzinisa said what he was sure of was that players had been paid without disputing the news that salaries had been slashed by half. “Since you know that players’ contractual engagements are handled at management level, the right person to comment on this part is the Chairman Rueben ‘Rhoo’ Nxumalo. He is the one directly dealing with players when it comes to salary issues,” said the PRO.

Meanwhile, Nxumalo was also reached and declined to comment as he said it was the PRO who spoke on behalf of the team. As for January, sources had confided that players had started getting worried when January salaries were delayed, but they eventually got the salaries minus the number of days they had not attended training sessions due to the lockdown. The sources claimed that deceased Director Thembumenzi ‘T-Man’ Mkhatshwa was handling the issue of players’ payment and there was uncertainty when salaries were delayed or if they will eventually get paid.

Explaining the whole situation, the maroon and white outfit PRO acknowledged there were glitches in paying players’ salaries for January after the demise of their former director.
He, however, insisted that according to his full knowledge, players were fully paid for that month, highlighting that they were even fully paid for December on the 24th.
