‘INVEST IN LAND, NOT SPRINTERS’

MBABANE – “Instead of investing in depreciating assets such as Sprinter busses, bosses of the big teams should invest in land.”

This was the view of Mbabane Highlanders Public Relations Officer (PRO) Paul ‘Magidza’ Masilela which he expressed on national radio, the Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services’ (EBIS) Sports Show yesterday morning. According to the long-serving and outspoken ‘Black Bull’ official, club bosses  must leave a legacy by acquiring appreciating assets such as land instead of depreciating assets such as Sprinter busses. Noteworthy is that his team and sworn rivals Mbabane Swallows have been dominating headlines in the past few weeks after the black and white outfit Managing Director (MD) Chief Ally Kgomongwe announced he was going to bid for a Sprinter bus that belonged to Swallows and was put on auction to cover EswatiniBank’s E300 000 arrears.

He eventually won the sealed bid and purchased the 2017 Mercedes Benz Sprinter model at E355 000, which was soon rebranded with Highlanders’ colours. Not very long, ‘the Beautiful Birds’ President Archbishop Bheki Lukhele announced that he had bought cash a new bus for Swallows in Johannesburg, a Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2020 model that cost nearly E1 million. Lukhele officially handed over the vehicle to Swallows officials last Friday night at their offices in Mbabane and said it would remain the team’s property as he would leave it behind when he left the club as president. “First let me take the opportunity to congratulate Mbabane Swallows on the new bus they bought,” he said. He said he did not believe that Swallows bought the bus with an intention to offend Highlanders, but they bought the bus simply because they needed it.

Masilela then applauded Kgomongwe for purchasing the other Sprinter which belonged to Swallows from an auction which he said Kgomongwe deemed it necessary to purchase the vehicle, but not with an intention to also offend Swallows. He added that it was a good thing for these bosses to do this for their teams. “Nonetheless, I have a request for club bosses. Let us focus on the future, invest in land as buses depreciate and become non-useful at a later stage,” he said. The PRO said he would be happy to see club bosses invest in infrastructure and cultivation fields as these lasted much longer. He said people who claimed to have played or managed teams must be proud to say that was what they left for the club.
