MBABANE – Sihlangu players have welcomed the decision by Eswatini Football Association (EFA) to extend the Dominic Kunene’s contract by a year.

His contract was renewed together with those of assistant coach Anthony Mdluli, goalkeeper coach Sipho ‘Shilton’ Dube and Mbuso Gina, who holds the position of being the squad trainer. The contract renewal for the head coach was announced last Wednesday by Eswatini Football Association (EFA) CEO Frederick Mngomezulu. He was quoted by this publication saying that Anthony Mdluli had been elevated to an assistant coach position while Sipho ‘Shilton’ Dube will be the goalkeeper coach.

The one-year contract had expired in December 2020. Also part of the squad is Mbuso Gina, who is the trainer of the national team.

Sihlangu goalkeeper Nhlanhla Gwebu congratulated the coaches for their reappointment.

“Coaching the national team is no child’s play. When the team loses, the coaches are taken to task. It is not an easy job, but I feel EFA made the right decision to give them a second chance. I have known Dube for a while, he is a good goalkeeper and looking to learn something new from him,” Gwebu said.

He also said the coaches deserved a second chance because of the COVID-19.

“COVID-19 forced some competitions like COSAFA to be cancelled. The coaches needed more time to assemble a winning squad and the need to play more competitions cannot be overemphasised. It would have been unfair if they were released with the short time they had at Sihlangu,” he added.

Meanwhile, Njabulo Thwala also shared similar sentiments.

“Its time for the coaches to prove themselves now that they have been given another chance. I have known Anthony for a while and I would say he is a good replacement for the late Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini. Dominic, Sipho and Mbuso are all good coaches and I am positive we will deliver under their leadership,” he said.

Sihlangu will soon go to full camp in preparation for the AFCON clash against the ‘Africa Wild Dogs’ of Guinea-Bissau. The game will be played on March 26 at Mavuso Sports Centre.

They will also travel to Dakar, to take on the ‘Taranga Lions’of Senegal on March 30.
