MBABANE – The Eswatini Football Association (EFA) has kept faith with national team, Sihlangu head coach, Dominic Kunene.

The former Young Buffaloes award-winning coach has been handed a new one-year contract after the expiry of his contract in December.

Kunene will lead Sihlangu in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2022 qualifiers, with the nation’s pride taking on the ‘African Wild Dogs’ of Guinea-Bissau at home on March 26 before travelling to Dakar, to take on the ‘Taranga Lions’ of Senegal on March 30. Goalkeeper coach, Anthony Mdluli has been elevated to the position of assistant coach, replacing the dearly departed Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini while former Sihlangu shot-stopper, Sipho ‘Shilton’ Dube returns to the squad’s technical team as goalkeeper coach. Mbuso Gina also retained his position as squad trainer.

EFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu confirmed that after yesterday’s Executive Committee virtual meeting a decision was taken to give Kunene another one-year renewable contract. “Yes, we had a virtual meeting today, where the Executive Committee in view of the forthcoming games against Guinea Bissau at home and Senegal away has made some appointments in the national team. Dominic Kunene has been given one-year contract together with Anthony Mdluli, who was part of the technical bench but is now elevated to assistant coach. Sipho Dube will be goalkeeper coach,” Mngomezulu said.

Mngomezulu said the national team would soon be going to full-time camp to prepare for the clash against the ‘African Wild Dogs’ of Guinea-Bissau to be played at Mavuso Sports Centre on March 26. Sihlangu lost the first leg tie away at the Estadio 24 de Setembro Stadium on November 13, 2019 3-0 in coach Kostadin Papic’s last match in charge.

Reached for comment last night, Sihlangu head coach Dominic Kunene thanked the EFA for having faith in them. “First of all let me thank the EFA for trusting us by renewing the contracts but at the same time it means we need to work even harder, especially having a contract renewed at this difficult period. We will sit down and strategise as technical. We hope football can return as well because our players are better conditioned when they are active,” Kunene said.
