MABANE – Tunisian giants Etoile du Sahel are set to arrive in the kingdom by next week Friday.

The news was confirmed by Young Buffaloes Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sandile Gwebu who clarified that the army outfit will play host to the CAF Confederation Cup first leg play-offs at the Mavuso Sports Centre on Valentine’s Day.

Gwebu said the reason the Tunisian side was expected to have arrived by next Friday was that as per CAF competitions rules, they had to be tested for COVID-19 on the said day before match day on Valentine’s Day.

Host

“We are playing host to the first leg on Sunday, February 14. Etoile du Sahel are expected to have arrived by Friday, February 12 because that is the day they should test for COVID-19,” said the CEO.

The army side mouthpiece further disclosed that the second leg of the second-tier continental inter-club competition will be on Sunday, February 21 where they will visit the Tunisians.

“The aim is for us to have arrived in Tunisia to honour the return fixture by Friday, February 19 so that we can also undergo the same process of testing for COVID-19 before the game,” he said.

Asked on how preparations were going ahead of the first leg, the CEO highlighted that he could not attend training yesterday but said the report he got from officials at training was that everything was going well.

As for injuries, Gwebu said he could give a proper comment today as that is when he will be paying a visit to the training camp to ascertain the situation.

Honour

Meanwhile, government has granted a special permission to the army side to resume training as a team with full consideration of, among other things: the commendable progress Buffaloes have already made in this season’s CAF competitions; the repercussions of failing to honour the upcoming matches both for the club and the country as well as the peculiar fact of this being a continental assignment which was already underway when the latest COVID-19 restrictions were put in place.
