MBABANE – It’s a massive recognition.

Shrewd sports administrator Zakhele Dlamini has been appointed to serve in the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Constitutional Review Commission (CRC).

According to a letter by AUSC CEO Stanley Mutoya dated January 22, 2021, the CRC’s purpose is to review the Region 5 constitution, aligning it with the organisational re-engineering model.

“I have the pleasure to inform you that the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 has identified you for immediate appointment to serve on the Constitutional Review Committee (CRC). The CRC is meant to align the Region 5 constitution to the organisational re-engineering model approved by the Council of Ministers in December 2020,” reads part of the letter.

Dlamini, who is a Manzini based attorney, was identified to serve together with Counsels from four other countries namely; Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

Tasked

Dlamini is also Athletics Eswatini (AE) President and not new to appointments of this magnitude by Region 5 as he also served in the Elections Nominations Committee last year.

This was a committee tasked with validating eligibility of candidatures submitted by member countries. This is the same committee that saw the nomination of local sports administrator Lawrence ‘Lolo’ Mthethwa, who was elected Chairperson of Finance and Marketing Commission.

Dlamini boasts of vast experience in sports, having been involved in different sporting codes where he served diligently most notably as Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Highlights of this include the review of the AE constitution, which was approved in May 2019, something which brought a new era to the athletics fraternity.

Judiciary, his legal acumen has been witnessed in different sports disputes where his expertise came in handy for many parties in cases that went as far as the high court.

He successfully defended Mbabane Highlanders in the case where the club had been charged for causing abandonment of the game against Mbabane Swallows. Some of his leading sports cases he won at the High Court include the Darren ‘Dazza’ Christie and Allen Mabuza disputes.

Last year, he was also appointed by the Sports Council to chair a tribunal to determine a dispute involving the Basketball Association and its members. Drawn for comment on his appointment, Dlamini said he appreciated the recognition and sounded confident that he would deliver to the expectations.

“Honestly, I really appreciate such recognition by an organisation of this magnitude and I believe that I will deliver to the expectations. This being the second appointment, it shows that they were happy with my contribution in the nominations committee and I’m really humbled” he said briefly
