EZULWINI - He was the first interviewee on SafariSoccer Show on YouTube this year.

That is Mbabane Highlanders boss Chief Ally Kgomongwe. He was on the show, which is hosted in Kenya, through YouTube on January 23. A number of issues were raised in the interview including Kgomongwe and the social media rumours that he was quitting Highlanders before the five-year contract ends.

“Rumours will always be rumours. People can say Safari TV is closing down when it’s not. I have some people in football back home who see what I do in Eswatini and they have repeatedly encouraged me to buy a status in our top league.

“South Africans support me and they want to support my Highlanders mission so it’s all rumours. I’m doing a good job for Highlanders so that’s why the talk, but I am taking the biggest and most successful team in Eswatini to Africa. We want to play Gor Mahia here in Kenya and play the best in South Africa,” Kgomongwe responded.

Kgomongwe dispelled the exit talk as rumours brewed by his success in the country.

“I grew up a soccer person and with the dream of owning a big team one day. Highlanders have always been in my heart as my father followed them and in three months as the director I won the Charity Cup,” he explained while adding that it was not easy taking over the club as some people were against it, but he was happy with the progress made and to also know his own country backs him to date.

Achieved

He said there was a lot he had achieved already; like a high standard clubhouse, quality players and playing as well as training equipment. He also mentioned his top notch signings for the club while confirming the sudden departure of former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thamsanqa Sangweni to Chippa United.

He emphasised that it was these investments that had South Africans encouraging him to purchase a status in the GladAfrica Championship or even DStv Premiership next season.

Kgomongwe made inquiries about now defunct Mbombela United last year but the club was relegated from the second tier league. It remains to be seen if his ambition lives on to be a reality as he has not made it a secret that he wants to buy a team status and be able to assist the best talent at Highlanders and the whole country move to the professional level.

He was also asked how he manages to run Highlanders and Ally’s Tigers while he also had businesses to run. Kgomongwe said it was all about planning and knowing your schedule while the main one was the financial muscle to do it all.
