MBABANE – Accolades are becoming his thing at Young Buffaloes.

That is gifted midfielder Sandile ‘Saviola’ Gamedze who was on Thursday confirmed as last season’s MTN Premier League Player of the Season. It’s a well-deserved gong for the senior national team, Sihlangu Semnikati, star who scored 17 league goals with eight games to spare before the outbreak of COVID-19 forced the abrupt ending of the season.

The free-scoring midfielder with a golden first touch and vision took both the Best Player and Top Goal scorer gongs. He had won both awards at the end of the first round. This is also his first MTN Premier League Best Player Award, but he has won it in EswatiniBank Cup and Ingwenyama Cup before.

“I’m very happy to be the league’s Best Player as it’s every player’s dream to achieve something individually at the end of the season. It’s a dream come true for me,” he said about the award.

Gamedze did not hide the fact that it was his first ever big award in the league throughout his time at Young Buffaloes who signed him from his home team, Madlenya FC, who ply their trade in the first division.

“I’ve won awards in knockouts, but this is my first in the premier league and that’s why it is important to me. It’s nice to be recognised after playing,” he said.

About their AS Vita second-leg clash in the CAF Champions League, Gamedze said they let their rivals off in the first-leg at home in Manzini.

lost the match

“That’s where we lost the match otherwise we gave it a good fight and we’re now going to try and give our best in the Confederation Cup,” he said when questioned by national radio EBIS Sport Show host Nathi ‘Mdockies’ Hlophe on Friday morning.

The club’s PRO, Sandile Gwebu, said it was important that while the delegation of 27 returned home safe from COVID-19, otherwise against AS Vita, they did their best but noted that their rivals were way ahead in terms of certain aspects of the game and well resourced.

He also confirmed their journey was still on albeit in the CAF Confederation Cup where the draw was made yesterday.
