MATSAPHA – He achieved big things in his illustrious football career.

The obituary of the late Sihlangu assistant coach Gcina ‘Magiyane’ Dlamini revealed that he was once attached to Spanish soccer giants FC Barcelona.

Barcelona, regarded as one of the highly-valued teams in the world, is where Dlamini spent some time honing his coaching skills. It was reliably gathered that this historic attachment happened at Barcelona’s base, famously known as Nou Camp, in 2007.

Before the Barcelona attachment, he also had a stint at South Africa’s top sides including Kaizer Chiefs (2000) and Supersport United.

However, the team that put his name in the football history books was Mhlambanyatsi Rovers where he coached the likes of Mfanzile ‘Fash’ Dlamini, Tony ‘TT’ Tsabedze, Mduduzi ‘Aghahowa’ Mdluli, Norman ‘Meje’ Nkambule, Lwazi ‘Shana’ Maziya and Lwazi ‘Zidane’ Maziya to mention a few.

According to his obituary, read by Lenyelenhle Malaza during the memorial service held at Matsapha Evangelical Church last Thursday, ‘Magiyane’ was born on October 21, 1969 to Rose Mlambile Dlamini and Absalom Mathonsi Dlamini. He attended school at Bhunya Primary School and Secondary School and completed his high school at Mhlatane High School.

He then enrolled for an electrical craft course at Eswatini College of Technology. He then joined Usuth Pulp Company as an apprentice electrician where he worked his way up to foremanship at the wood yard.

He started in football as a referee, went on to play for Real Stars and Rovers. He then coached Rovers with his dream to see young boys develop into soccer stars.

It was also mentioned in the obituary that ‘Magiyane’ lived and breathed football. Adding to that, is the fact that he unearthed Eswatini’s greatest talents. Teams that have been fortunate enough to work with ‘Magiyane’ are Mhlume United, Manzini Wanderers, Green Mamba, Vovovo FC, Moneni Pirates and the national Under 17s and Under 20s. He was the current Sihlangu assistant coach to Dominic Kunene before his untimely death.
