MATSAPHA – At 41, 4eva Cycling Club’s Morgan Rudd is still at his best.

This is after he won the second edition of the Newcom Wheels Criterium Race, which was held at Matsapha Industrial Site yesterday. The winner finished the 35km race with a time of 56:31:16 minutes. It was not an easy one for Rudd as Newcom Wheels rider Kwanele Jele gave him a hard time. The latter came close in second with a time of 56:35:00 minutes. Coming third was another Newcom rider, Sihlangu Sikhondze, in 58:49:60 minutes. Noteworthy is that the riders had to do 10 laps to complete the main race.

Speaking after his victory, Rudd said he was happy to have come back after what seemed like a tough race.

“Look, I missed the route with two laps to go, but then as you know my strengths are flats and speed, I managed to catch up with Jele, who was leading at that time. I want to congratulate this young boy for giving me good competition with his teammate Sihlangu Sikhondze,” he said.

He also praised Newcom Wheels Chairman Mbusi Motsa for grooming future competitive riders.

Meanwhile, strong contender Kwanele Jele said he let things slide just at the end.

“You know during the last lap, I could not get a strong finish otherwise I am proud of myself for giving him tough competition. Rudd is a specialist on flats while I am good with climbs,” Jele said.

He also thanked Muzi Shabangu for motivating him ahead of this race.

“He told me to challenge Morgan and he told me it was possible,” he said. Winning the 20km was MTN Khemani’s Ethan Young while shining in the 10km was Yenzokuhle Dlamini.
