MBABANE – Darryl and Carter McKenzy were the champions of the Lusip Monster Fish competition held on Saturday.

The father and son caught the largest tiger fish.

Darryl scooped the E10 000 prize as his fish weighed 3.6kg and Carter won the juniors’ category, taking home E500 for a 2.3kg tiger fish.

It took over eight hours for the Mckenzy’s to make this catch in the depth of the Lusip Dam located at Vakasha Lodge in Siphofaneni.

It appears that luck was on the Mckenzys side as eight-year-old Carter won  the competition second time in a row, while Darryl made up for last years’ disappointment where he ended a day long fishing spree empty handed.

The runner-up, Dave Laurence, won E2 500 for catching the second largest tiger fish that weighed 3.1kg.

“My son and I were so happy to win the competition. We started fishing at 5:30am and I caught mine at 1pm and Carter caught his soon after. We used tilapia as bait and we had a great time,” said Darryl.

Compliance

The event’s organiser, Belinda Forbes, said there were 140 participants and in compliance with the COVID-19 rules and regulation, the anglers were based in different camps.

Only the teams that qualified for prizes were invited to the presentation in respect of social distancing and to limit the gathering to 100 as per government’s regulation.

Caution

“Fishing safely together with the reality of COVID-19 meant that we had to practice caution. The Lusip Monster Fish Competition is a great place to get away from stress.

“By following simple guidelines, we relaxed and had fun with friends and families. Congratulations to the winners and we are looking forward to another exciting competition next year,” said Forbes.

This tournament also provides the locals with job opportunities.

She further highlighted that after weighing the fish, they are released back in to the dam.
