MBABANE – Sometimes the solution is just in front of you, but seeing it maybe the bigger challenge.

For Mazwe Dlamini, the gym or a personal trainer were not the obvious answers for his weight challenge but the solution came from where he least expected.

Perhaps even the partial lockdown was a blessing in disguise for the 25-year -old football player as he struggled with weight control yet he aspired to play professional football.

The answer to his weight challenges came from social media, Facebook, when he decided to take part in the 99 days weight loss challenge from one of the groups he joined.

Let’s hear more about the weight loss journey of this young man as his story might just be the inspiration you need to start your weight loss or bodybuilding journey.

Name: Mazwe ‘Doosh’ Dlamini.

When did you start training and what was the motivation behind it?

I started training seriously to lose weight during the COVID-19 pandemic, June 1, to be exact after I decided to join a 99 days weight loss challenge I saw on Facebook.

What was your weight then compared to now?

I lost control of myself and gained weight until I was 91kg last year. In April I did a little bit of individual training but I was not consistent until I was 87kg before the challenge. Right now I’m on 79kg and dropped from waist 36 to 32. I managed to lose 8kg after the 99 days challenge.

What challenges did you encounter and how you overcame them to stay focused?

Cravings for snacks and futis chicken wings were my weakness, but it’s all in the mind. I had to counsel myself and picture the end result I desired. The mind is a powerful tool, use it wisely. Also diverting to the Keto diet was hectic the first two weeks but I learnt to enjoy it for my benefit.

What was your training routine?

I would train four times a week in the morning, doing strictly the skipping rope of 800 to 1 000 jumps per session, in intervals. In the evening, I would go to the local sports ground to do short sprints and few running exercises. Basically high intensity training fuels weight loss rather than jogging

What are your fitness and weight goals?

Reaching 75kg by the end of November is my target then l will maintain from there. I also want to work on my one pack, it’s very stubborn hahaha, so I will start a 30 days challenge in November to shed off the 4kg surplus from 79kg to 75kg.

What sort of nutritional changes have you made?

Eating strictly vegetables and meat for supper has become a lifestyle. I have managed to cut down on starch and fall in love with organic food over processed foods, that’s why our ancestors managed to live for such long years. Nature is a healthy provider, it gives us plants and meat, and we actually don’t need anything else to survive hunger.

What is your personal motivation slogan that keeps you going?

I programmed my mind to be positive and always look at the brighter side of every situation; you will have less stress in life. Like in my weight gain, I learnt to eat healthy, not the negative view of losing my chance to play professional football.

What advice would you share with someone dealing with weight issues?

Just use the skipping rope, and eat healthy, do both consistently, you will see wonders. Allow yourself to have to cheat on some days per week as a reward for hard work but always get back on track. Lastly, you never gained overnight so you won’t lose overnight, it’s a journey. Avoid pressure.
