MBABANE – The going will be tougher for the country’s senior women national team, Sitsebe Samhlekazi, in the 2020 COSAFA Women’s Championship next month.

Eswatini was yesterday drawn against hosts, South Africa which means Sitsebe will face the fierce Banyana Banyana, tough Angola and Comoros.

This is Group A of three groups. Group B has Zambia, Malawi and Lesotho while Group C has Zimbabwe, Botswana and Tanzania.

COSAFA (Council of Southern Africa Football Associations) conducted the draw yesterday where the fascinating ties were produced for the competition to take place in Nelson Mandela Bay from November 3-14, with an exciting line-up of matches for a return to women’s international football in Africa.

Leave

This effectively means Sitsebe could leave the country on November 1 or 2 but the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) is yet to confirm that.

COSAFA, in a press release soon after the draw, stated that defending champions South Africa were the top seeds in Group A in what will be a tough pool that will provide fierce clashes.

“It is a difficult pool to call, with Eswatini and Angola likely to provide stern tests for the home nation, and Comoros likely to be stronger than when South Africa defeated them 17- 0 last year. Zambia head Group B, while Group C contains 2011 champions, Zimbabwe.

“Only the top team in each pool and the best runner-up advance to the semi-final,” reads an excerpt from the press release.

Under-17

The tournament will be played concurrently with the Women’s Under-17 Championship from November 5-13.

After the late withdrawal of Eswatini and Botswana, there are five nations in the under-17 tournament in a single pool which will be played on a round-robin basis.

The five teams are hosts South Africa, Comoros, Tanzania, defending champions Zambia and Zimbabwe.
