MBABANE – Badly injured athlete Mfundo Mkhonta is hoping to fully recover and get a pair of spikes ahead of the Athletics Eswatini (AE) National Championships on October 31, 2020.

The Mbabane Athletics Club athlete suffered a severe injury on Saturday during the AE first edition of the build-ups competitions. He was rushed to the Mbabane Government Hospital after sustaining a skin tear on the upper part of his foot when his teammate stepped on him when exchanging a baton during the 4X400m of the national championships build-up event. Spikes have pins underneath for track gripping.

Mkhonta said during events they used the team spikes but unfortunately there was no size for him on the day and he had to run barefooted. A pair of spikes costs, minimum, E300. Mkhonta received a hero’s accolades as he finished the 400m while in excruciating pain.

“There are spikes for the team that we use during events and unfortunately I had no size, and I had to run barefooted, something that caused the injury. It is something that could have been avoided if I had the spikes,” he said.

Mkhonta said as athletes they struggled when it came to the proper gear as they had to fund it themselves. He said the club met them halfway.

“Having the proper gear is one thing that can motivate us athletes to improve the standard. I hope that I will secure one pair, especially as we are heading towards the national championships. I would really appreciate any kind of help in securing the spikes,” he added.

The athlete said he believed that he would have fully recovered when the national championships were hosted on October 31, 2020 at Mavuso Sports Centre.

“I think it will be too soon for the second edition of the build-up as it is in two weeks. I will be preparing now for the national championships,” he said.
