MBABANE – He has lived up to his promise.

Mbabane Highlanders’ South African businessman and politician boss Chief Ally Kgomongwe has reportedly honoured his pledge to assist Manzini Wanderers ease their financial challenges with a loan. Reliable information gathered yesterday revealed that the Hub giants have allegedy received the financial assistance from Kgomongwe to cater for the players’ salaries among other pressing issues. Impeccable sources from both teams confided in this newspaper that Wanderers allegedly received E75 000, which still does not cover the E150 000 wage bill for the maroon and white giants. Wanderers have made it no secret that their players are still to be paid their salaries for the past six months.

The Pretoria-based businessman has been criticised by some in the local football fraternity for publicising his financial assistance to Wanderers, a move which some viewed as compromising the integrity of the game in terms of the local football laws. He was given 14 days by the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) to explain his assistance to the ‘Weslians’ and it has been confirmed that he responded as requested.

Confidential

Reached for comment, Wanderers Management Committee (MC) Chairman Bongani ‘Bhanyaza’ Mdluli declined to commit himself on the reports that Kgomongwe had released funds to them as per promise. “Issues of salaries are confidential between the employer and employee. For that reason, I would not want to comment on these reports,” Mdluli said. Highlanders’ top official, Benson Dlamini, was contacted but he also declined to comment, referring inquiries on the issue to Wanderers. Kgomongwe is said to have already returned to his home country after spending several days in the country.

However, a Wanderers player, speaking on condition of anonymity, asserted that they were given half their salaries for a month. “It is true that we have received half our salaries for a month from management. Even though this is not full pay, it will come in handy because under the present circumstances, half a bread is better than nothing for everybody associated with this team. We will now be able to buy food for our families,” the player, one of the longest-serving at the team, revealed. No immediate comment could be obtained from Kgomongwe at the time of compiling this report last night.
