MBABANE – There is ray of hope that Sihlangu could be back in action in three months’ time.

According to the new dates for qualifiers of both  Total Africa Cup of Nations 2021 and the FIFA World Cup, Qatar 2022, Sihlangu is projected to be back in action by November. The new dates were announced by CAF Acting General Secretary Abdelmounaim Bah in a statement to all member associations including the Eswatini Football Association (EFA). This will surely come as good news for the EFA as there were initial fears that Sihlangu may not kick the ball this year. These qualifying matches had to be postponed by the continent’s football mother body due to the outbreak of COVID-19 globally.

Postpone

The decision to postpone the qualifiers was taken in a CAF Executive Committee meeting on June 30, 2020. Initially, the final tournament of the Total Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021 was postponed to January 2022, but the dates have been altered once again. This could mean that EFA must start planning for the resumption of the local squad’s preparations as November is not too far away. Sihlangu are still involved in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (Qatar 2021), where they are in the same group with Senegal, led by England’s Liverpool FC star Saido Mane, Congo Brazzaville and Guinea-Bissau.

Before the games were postponed, the locals were due to travel to Guinea-Bissau for a home and away tie before travelling to Dakar, Senegal for the last match of the qualifiers. EFA’s Marketing and Communications Officer Muzi Radebe confirmed the correspondence from CAF on the new dates. “I can confirm that we have received the new dates for the AFCON Qualifiers from CAF. That’s all we can say for now,” Radebe said.
