MBABANE – “Time will tell if whatever arrangement the two clubs have reached was the correct one or not.”

These were the words of Manzini Wanderers legend Jerry ‘Mbazo’ Gamedze in reaction to the news of Mbabane Highlanders and Manzini Wanderers working together.

Highlanders Managing Director (MD) Chief Ally Kgomongwe called a joint press briefing a fortnight ago at the Happy Valley Hotel, Ezulwini.

Present during the conference were top officials from both the capital city giants and Wanderers.

Announced

The South African businessman and politician announced that he had found the ‘Weslians’ two potential directors, a male and female, his business partners in South Africa.

Wanderers are to choose one from the two according to their preference. Kgomongwe had been approached by the hub giants to help them scout for a director.

The Pretoria-based businessman further announced that he will be paying salaries for Wanderers’ players and loan them money to sign players. The money is to be re-paid by the soon-to-arrive Wanderers director.

The actions of both teams drew a barrage of criticism from football commentators, analysts and observers. The gist of the argument was that the teams flouted football statutes and their actions were likely to bring local football into disrepute as well as injure integrity of the sport.

The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) is still investigating the matter. According to the hub giants and Sihlangu legend, only time will tell if the decision to have this arrangement by the teams was correct or not.

“That is yet to be tested and I wouldn’t like to say much on it as I have read from the newspapers that the mother body of local clubs would like to seek audience with them,” said Gamedze.

The football legend highlighted that it was difficult to answer whether or not it was the right decision for Wanderers to approach Kgomongwe for help.

Prompted

“This is because I am not well-versed on what prompted the elders of the club to approach Ally as I strongly believe that they met and discussed it at length before reaching that resolution,” he said.

Asked if he personally approved of the arrangement, Gamedze said, “Who am I to approve or disapprove when that decision comes from elders of the club? I was taught by my parents, who instilled good values in me, that I should always respect those who are senior to me and if there is an element where I feel something should have been done in another way, I should seek audience with them and present my case, rather than exposing their dirty linen in public.”
