MANZINI – Make hay while the sun shines.

This proverb rings true for Mbabane Highlanders, who are taking advantage of the football suspension due to COVID-19 – the black and white ensemble are in the transfer market for new signings. In their ‘kraal’ already is former Mbabane Swallows and Denver Sundowns midfielder in 21-year-old Sibonginkhosi ‘Gudas’ Dlamini and Ingwenyama Cup  Best Regional Player award-winning Siwakhile Shongwe from Manchester United in Pigg’s Peak. Internationally, the club is also busy scouting for talent and experience, particularly in South Africa.

Emerged

It emerged yesterday that Inkunz’emnyama, as Highlanders are fondly known, are edging closer to what would be a real marquee signing. Sources closer to the capital city giants and this season’s Ingwenyama Cup runners-up have claimed terms have been agreed with South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) outfit, Platinum Stars, former centre back, Siphamandla Mlilo. Mlilo appeared for Platinum Stars when they were shocked by Swallows with a 4-2 defeat in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup in 2017 at Somhlolo National Stadium, Lobamba. He last played for Stars last season while he had anticipated joining AmaTuks in the GladAfrica Championship when Highlanders pounced.
“I am personally dealing with the player directly and he’s agreed to joining us. And he’s not coming in cheap. He’s a professional and knows about Swallows a lot, especially its late boss and also about Sandile Hlatshwako, who he says scored against them,” confirmed Highlanders boss South African businessman and politician Chief Ally Kgomongwe yesterday.

Agreed

He said that all that was left now was for them to put pen to paper otherwise he was certain a deal was agreed on. “Mlilo is a professional and mentioning figures now is not something he wants but it’s a two-year deal that’s big on the money too,” Kgomongwe responded when asked how much it would cost him to bring the player to Eswatini while also insisting that he was ‘bringing the fire’ next season.
