MBABANE – Athletes joined the world in celebrating the Olympic Day on Tuesday.

For the first time, the day was celebrated behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The Olympic Movement celebrated the day by creating the world’s largest 24-hour digital-first Olympic workout.
The Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) annually celebrates the day by hosting sporting events.

Celebrated

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, this year’s event was celebrated online where people were urged to post their physical activities in a video format yesterday.
The day saw Olympians, athletes and fans all over the globe, get active in the world’s largest 24-hour digital Olympic workout. According to Olympic.org, since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world into lockdown and the postponement of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, close to 5 000 Olympians have engaged with a remarkable 243 million people online across more than 50 countries in the IOC’s #StayStrong, #StayActive, #StayHealthy campaign.

They did this by sharing their daily workouts and uplifting tips on how to stay healthy in body and mind. Olympic Day 2020 is expected to take this campaign to the next level.

Power

“Celebrating Olympic Day may feel very different from all previous years, but at the same time, on this Olympic Day, our message of the power of sport to bring hope and optimism to everyone resonates even stronger,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.
“Let us join together to use this power of sport to prepare the postponed Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as a moment of solidarity and resilience of humankind,” he added.
