MBABANE – He has the backing of at least six Premier League teams. That is Pigg’s Peak Black Swallows Chairman Charles Matsebula, who is reportedly enjoying tremendous support from other teams ahead of his imminent legal showdown with the Eswatini Football Association (EFA).

The outspoken football administrator has been making headlines recently on local media after clashing with the country’s football mother body.
In the past week, Matsebula was given 14 days by the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) to explain why he should not be charged for various utterances he is accused of having made in local newspapers.
From the EFA letter, which this publication got hold of, the country’s football mother body compelled Matsebula to respond within the stipulated time, failing which he was likely to be charged in terms of articles 23 and 24 of the regulations governing the application of the EFA statutes.

Confirmed

The Pigg’s Peak based outfit boss confirmed receipt of the letter on Thursday signed by the association’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) ) Frederick Mngometulu. He declined to comment on the legal aid support from some fellow Premier League teams.
“My lawyers made it clear I cannot comment on this matter,” Matsebula said briefly.
This publication has gathered that a number of teams under the PLE – six teams we spoke to - are against the move made by the EFA.

“We will support Charles financially and in kind in this matter and we are not talking things lightly,” one of the team bosses said on condition of anonymity.
Information gathered is to the effect that the teams feel Matsebula is ‘under attack’ by the EFA for exercising his constitutional right to discuss issues affecting their teams as a member of the Board of Governors (BoGs) structure. Reports suggest that other teams feel their constitutionally enriched rights were violated and the matter should be addressed.

Subsequently, the teams are reported to have decided to support Matsebula and help him with legal representation should his matter with the EFA continue.
New information suggests that the teams have resolved to establish a legal aid fund or scheme where they planned on making financial contributions to help pay for legal bills should Matsebula require a legal representative if he is eventually charged by the EFA.

Matsebula has been given 14 days to explain in writing why he should not be charged for his media utterances made in the Times of Eswatini dated June 2, 2020 and May 19, 2020 and in the Eswatini Observer dated 31st March, 2020.
“You are expected that as a Board of Governor of the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and director of Pigg’s Peak Black Swallows Football Club, operating under the jurisdiction of the EFA, to conduct yourself in all football matters in a manner that does not bring football into disrepute,” part of the letter signed by EFA CEO Mngometulu sent to Matsebula, reads.
