MBABANE – Tensions are running high. Tempers flared during the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) Special Meeting on Tuesday afternoon at Sigwaca House. The meeting was and attended by about 20 Board of Governors (BoGs) representing the different elite teams.

PLE Chairman Peter ‘Touch’ Magagula chaired the meeting called by his executive committee to comply with a signed petition from 18 BoGs over two weeks ago.

The petition implored the PLE executive committee to convene the meeting within 14 days in line with constitutional requirements.
The first gathering was held at the Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Technical Centre over a week ago, but could not be finished due to time constraints as the discussions centred mostly on the effects the COVID-19 pandemic has on football.

It was then agreed that the meeting be continued on Tuesday where a number of concerns raised by the BoGs were discussed intensively.

Threatened

This is where tempers threatened to reach boiling point after verbal confrontation involving some BoGs and some executive committee members in the course of the discussions, in particular when it emerged that the executive committee had not met after last week Tuesday’s meeting.

Also sparking the verbal showdown further was accusations from some irate BoGs directed to the executive as they felt they were not giving some of them the opportunity to make submissions.

So intense was the confrontation that the meeting was momentarily turned into a circus as unpalatable words were exchanged.
“Some BoGs felt that they were being deliberately overlooked despite that they were raising hands to make submissions during the discussions. It was at this point that the tensions rose and the meeting turned upside down. It was not a pretty sight for Premier League football,” one of the governors, who was part of the meeting, confided.

It needed the quick intervention of some BoGs to bring the situation under control and the meeting was back in order.
Interestingly, the issue involving the verbal showdown between the chairman and some BoGs was kept under wraps. Magagula referred inquiries to Chief Operations Officer (COO) Pat Vilakati.
When called, Vilakati said there was always a possibility of tempers rising especially in meetings of such magnitude ahead of elections but stated that it was nothing sinister.
