MBABANE – Basketball player/coach Mandisa Zwane has goals to achieve and refuses to give in to the challenges of the partial lockdown imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He may be away from his second home, the basketball courts, but has not stopped seeking other avenues to pursue his fitness goals.

He admitted to the hardships he faced at home as he can no longer meet and groom his players, but believes that he needs to stay motivated and focused in order to inspire them to follow suit.
Individual training is the only way he manages to keep fit and despite the limited space in his compound, the enthusiastic coach’s love for the ball gets him dunking at home and doing drills in his backyard.

Focus

He uses this time to focus on strength training and in improving his speed by doing road training and metafit training. “It’s a setback that you can practise but cannot play or compete. The virus has affected us all, but we need to continue working on our goals,” said Zwane.
Luckily enough, he also has a coach who inspires him through videos so that he continues to practise at home. He also mentioned that the lockdown gave him time to do self-introspection and also strategise on new tactics to improve his coaching skills and develop his team.

“I have also been looking at how other coaches around the globe are ensuring their players keep fit and safe through different social media platforms and have implemented that with my own team,” he said.
As a safety precaution, Zwane is mindful of good hygiene to avoid contracting COVID-19 while exercising and running home errands. With the uncertainty surrounding the virus, Zwane urged athletes from the different sports that they should continue pushing their limits through training in readiness for the resumption of sports activities.
