MBABANE – The late Police Officer and Mbabane Cheetahs rugby team player Phumlani Bongani Mndzebele’s best in the sport was yet to come.

The 28-year-old was laid to rest on Saturday at Mdzimba by family members, teammates at rugby, Royal Eswatini Police Services (REPS) officers and friends. He was among the 11 Police Officers and a truck driver who died in an accident that occurred along the Mhlaleni/ Nhlambeni Road, where a police minibus and truck carrying sand collided and caught fire. A number of rugby players from his team and other teams came to see their own being laid to rest. His teammate Andile Sihlongonyane said they were still short for words after the accident, as they lost one of the people who was yet to reach his best.

Farewell

It was a sad and emotional farewell to all those who came to show their support. Representing the National Commissioner of Police William Dlamini was Deputy Commissioner Mumcy Dlamini, who said Bongani joined the REPS force in 2017 and he proceeded to the Operations Support Services Unit (OSSU) in 2018. “Ingwenyama named them the ‘Special Force’. The whole police force is saddened by the sudden demise of such a young energetic officer,” she said.

Sanitisers

During the funeral, social distancing was emphasised to all those present and sanitisers were provided from entry and upon exit. People were encouraged to stay in groups of less than 20 people. Meanwhile among the sports personalities, former Umbelebele player Ncamiso ‘Sthutha’ Mavuso was laid to rest on Saturday at Luhlangotsini while Royal Leopard doctor Bheki Lazarus Makama’s funeral was yesterday at Nkoyoyo.
