MTN’S E7M FOR SPORTS

MBABANE – MTN Eswatini is the leading financial supporter of sports in the kingdom.
The mobile telecommunications company spends E7 million annually on sports.

Football is the major beneficiary, as a sum of E6 million is directed to the Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) and National First Division.
The remaining over E1 million is shared by the other sporting codes, which including cycling, basketball and golf. This money is exclusive of pledges or financial support the company contributes towards other sports events such as the King’s Golf Cup and celebrated Imbube Marathon.

Expenditure

The expenditure was exclusively confirmed by MTN Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Wandile Mtshali to the Times Sports Desk.
“I am sure you are aware that MTN is proudly the cornerstone or pillar of sports in Eswatini. We currently spend over E7 million in sports in the country. A total of E6 million is invested in soccer, covering the MTN Premier League and MTN National First Division. The latter sets the base for any soccer activity in the country,” said Mtshali.

The CEO also highlighted that MTN had partnered with the country for almost 20 years in football to date.
He said this had seen a massive improvement in the running and professionalisation of the sport in the country.

“The national team, Sihlangu, has improved dramatically over the years, for this, MTN is proud and simultaneously grateful,” he said. Mtshali added that they had continued to support other sporting codes outside of soccer because of their passion to develop sports in the country.
Meanwhile, MTN has pumped close to E900 000 into basketball in just about three years.

Increment

In total, the mobile company has sponsored the Eswatini National Basketball League (ENBL) to a tune of E870 000 in three years. Last year, the partnership was renewed with a whopping E320 000 package.

This shows an increment of E20 000 when compared to the previous year’s sponsorship of E300 000.
The sponsorship package for the MTN Khemani Road Classic is E0.4 million, while the Golf Monthly Masters sponsorship package is nearly E200 000. Champions of the MTN Premier League are entitled to E1 million while first round best finishers get the E350 000 incentive.
